Is Augusta Precious Metals Right for Your Gold IRA?

Why Augusta ranks first here, and what that ranking does not prove

Augusta Precious Metals sits at the top of this site's list because the data we hold for it is the strongest on customer ratings: a 4.9/5 Trustpilot score, an A+ BBB grade with no complaints recorded, and an AAA grade from the Business Consumer Alliance. It also lists a flat annual fee rather than a percentage of assets, a named representative and a mandatory educational session.

Two cautions belong next to that ranking. First, Augusta is the partner behind the free kit links on this site, so you should read our ranking as an affiliate publisher's opinion and check the ratings yourself on BBB, Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs. Second, a high score on service does not tell you whether the metals are fairly priced; that depends on the premium over spot and the later buyback price, neither of which a rating measures.

The onboarding sequence

Augusta's process differs from a typical phone-first dealer because it starts with education. The company runs a one-on-one web conference before you commit capital, and the home page describes it as mandatory. The steps below follow the order shown in the setup section of this page:

• Book the consultation and attend the educational web conference.
• Open the account with the custodian, which the home page lists as Equity Trust Company.
• Fund the IRA through a direct rollover or transfer.
• Select IRS-eligible metals, which Augusta lists as American Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs and PAMP Suisse bars, and have them delivered to Delaware Depository.

A named account representative stays with you after the metals are bought. Ask who that person is, how you reach them, and what happens to your account if they leave the company.

What the $50,000 minimum means in practice

Augusta has the highest minimum of the five companies on this site. That is not automatically a flaw. A higher minimum lets a company justify one-on-one time with each client, and a flat annual fee gets cheaper as a percentage of the account when the balance is large. It does make the company unsuitable for anyone starting with a small rollover.

If your account is below $50,000, the cons list above is the practical answer: you would need to look at Goldco ($25,000), Noble Gold ($20,000), American Hartford Gold or Birch Gold Group (both $10,000). If you are above it, minimum size stops being a filter and the questions below matter more.

Questions to put to Augusta in writing

• What are the setup, annual custodian, storage and insurance fees, each stated in dollars per year?
• Is the flat annual fee a single charge or the sum of a custodian fee and a storage fee?
• Is storage at Delaware Depository segregated or commingled, and is there a price difference?
• How does the best-price match guarantee work, and what proof of a competing quote is required?
• What is the buyback process, how quickly are sale proceeds paid, and how is the buyback price set relative to spot?
• Which metals are available inside the IRA? The home page notes that Augusta is limited to gold and silver.

A company that is confident in its fees will answer these in a written fee schedule. Treat a refusal to do so as a reason to pause.
